Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration
Soil is more than just the dirt under our feet. It is the planet’s most biodiverse habitat for almost 60 per cent of all species. And it is the direct and indirect basis for an estimated 95 % of our food.
This is why droughts are so alarming. Throughout the world, people are feeling the impacts of the climate and environmental crises most strongly through water: the land is drying up and fertile grounds are turning to dust.
Today’s World Environment Day 2024 is dedicated to the topic of Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” One important question in this mission is how we can protect and restore freshwater ecosystems. Here’s a few approaches:
- Invest in holistic, integrated water resource management plans that take into account the entire water cycle: from source to distribution, economic use, treatment, recycling, reuse and return to the environment
- Improve water quality by reducing pollution and increasing monitoring to identify pollution sources and assess the health of freshwater ecosystems
- Invest in rainwater harvesting, smart irrigation practices and recycling water plants
“Drought is daunting, as its effects on people’s lives are devastating. But through ingenuity, commitment and solidarity, it can be successfully addressed” says Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
Nothing to add. Only to act.
