HOBAS Air Pipe for Treatment Plant in Budapest, HU

Located on a floor space of 29 hectares in the north of Csepel the Budapest Central Sewage Treatment Plant (BKSZTT) lies close to the center of Csepel district, which is a typical city center with houses, shops, parks, etc. it was important to prevent any disturbances regarding the odors and chemicals emitted during the treatment process. For this reason, the local government asked for designers and developers to cover the WWTP. An air pipe system was planned to transport the warm emissions from the sewage area to the filter house from where it is released to the exterior. There were tight demands to the pipes, for instance regarding the high temperatures (70° C) of the air to be conveyed. The narrow construction site between two concrete buildings asked for products that are easy to handle, light in weight and simple to install. Further essential properties were high chemical resistance, the possibility to receive tailor made fittings from the same pipe supplier, and connectability to other pipe materials – in this case, to steel pipes. HOBAS Pipes convinced on all points. The employed HOBAS GRP Air Pipe System consists of various pipe diameters ranging from DN 800 to DN 2000 and was installed in 2008 and 2009. After static calculations and consulting with the clients – designers and constructors – the proposed pipe design comprised a stiffness of SN 5000. This pipe design covers the negative working pressure of -0.8 bar. A total of 773 m HOBAS Air Pipe including bends, flanges, tees, and y-pieces were consequently installed in open trench. Budapest Central Sewage Treatment Plant represents one of the biggest environmental investments made in Europe. No efforts and costs have been spared concerning its architecture and landscaping, so that the plant, which went into operation in 2010, harmoniously blends in with its surroundings and goes unnoticed by Csepel downtown – not least thanks to the HOBAS GRP Air Pipe System.
