On the small island of Indre Rosøy in the Norvegian county Nordland, the company Gigante Salmon AS is building a highly innovative, land-based salmon farming facility. Amiblu supplied 1100 m GRP pipes for the transportation of sea water into the fish basins.
“If the fish are doing well, then we are doing well.”
These are the words of Helge E. W. Albertsen, CEO of Gigante Salmon AS. It’s not a mission you come across very often. But this project also isn’t an everyday one. On a small island on the Arctic Circle in Norway, Gigante Salmon AS is building a highly innovative land-based salmon farming facility. “We want to produce high-quality protein without leaving a bigger climate footprint than is absolutely necessary”, Albertsen explains. “This means combining nature’s conditions along the Norwegian coastline with the best technology available.”
Thanks to continuous water replacement and speed in the basins, the salmon can constantly swim against the current in fresh seawater and are thus expected to be fitter and healthier. Unlike in conventional, sea-based aquaculture, lice and fish escapes are not an issue. At the same time, the innovative land-based concept reduces emissions, feed wastage, and impacts on the local environment: Sludge is filtered from the water used in production, reducing the amount of wastewater released into the sea by half compared to conventional salmon farming. 50% of the emissions are collected and used as fertilizer or other products in the circular economy.
An innovative concept requires cutting-edge materials: Gigante Salmon AS turned to Amiblu to produce 1100 m GRP pipes for transporting sea water into the gigantic fish basins. The pipes were produced in the Amiblu factory in Gdánsk and shipped from the harbor in Gdynia, PL directly to the island. They were unloaded with a mobile crane and then transported by wheel loaders to the storage area a few hundred meters away. The pipes are being installed in 10 parallel lines which will have water flowing through them at an amazing 45 m³/s.
Production started in September 2023 with one fish basin. The remaining two basins will follow until 2025. At full production, the company aims to produce 20,000 metric tonnes (MT) of salmon per year.
Gigante Salmon AS is a family-owned company with headquarters in Bodø, which has produced salmon since 1988, and has ownership throughout the entire value chain.
