Drainage System for Airport in Lithuania
Šiauliai International Airport (also known as Zokniai Airport) is located 7 km southeast of the city of Šiauliai in northern Lithuania and covers an area of 471 hectares. The airport was built in 1935 and originally used as military base for the Lithuanian Air Force. In the course of the years, the airport was reconstructed in order to meet civil requirements. Nowadays, it serves both as military and civil airport and is owned by the Lithuanian army. Civil aviation and ground handling services are organized by the municipal company Šiauliu oro uostas.
In 2005, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense and the NATO, whose aircrafts take off at Šiauliai, decided to invest in the reconstruction of the runways and the airfield of the airport. The renovation work also involved the installation of a new stormwater drainage system. The fact that Šiauliai International Airport has to accommodate all types of aircrafts regardless of their landing weight made the highly loadable HOBAS Pipes ideal for this application. In addition to this, the prospect of a quick and easy installation and the pipes’ characteristics – including their long service life and the outstanding hydraulic performance – convinced the investors to choose a HOBAS Sewer System. Between July and September 2005, the pipes were delivered and the installation was finished by October 2005 to the contractor’s utmost satisfaction.
